Discrete Landscape

Discrete Landscape

Discrete Landscape, designed by Mario Cucinella Architects for Arte Sella, is a site-specific installation that explores how additive manufacturing can redefine the relationship between architecture, landscape, and material research. Set along the stream at Villa Strobele, it forms a sinuous path leading to a contemplative space framing forest, water, and sky.

The structure consists of 415 modular 3D-printed blocks inspired by basalt columns, digitally designed to interlock without mortar, reinterpreting dry-stone techniques through computational design and robotic precision.

Using our manufacturing process, which combines a robotic arm with the Feeder DM80 and Extruder TS25, the project employs a natural lime-based composite developed with Calchèra San Giorgio and the Politecnico di Milano, integrating local aggregates and industrial by-products such as tonalite waste and rice husk ash.

Reducing transport and waste while enhancing precision, Discrete Landscape demonstrates 3D printing as both a structural and sustainable approach to site-specific design.
